My approach to psychotherapy is largely based on psychodynamic psychotherapy, which focuses on increasing the awareness of unconscious processes that influence the way a person thinks and acts. I also integrate basic principles from other therapy modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and supportive therapy as appropriate.
In some cases, I may refer individuals to other therapists for more specific therapy modalities that I do not provide. I do not offer couples or family therapy at this time.
For those engaging in psychotherapy, I believe it is important to meet at least once a week for more optimal benefits.
In some cases, medications may be recommended to help improve one’s wellbeing. I utilize a patient-centered approach in determining what, if any, medications may be appropriate and strive to use the lowest therapeutic dose to minimize side effects.
Typically, I aim to meet with patients whom see me for only medication management every one to two months, and more frequently as needed. Patients who are pregnant or under 12 months postpartum can expect to be seen on at least a monthly basis. In order to remain active in the practice, individuals would need to be seen at least once every three months.
I offer one-time reproductive psychiatry consultations for women seeking specialized recommendations regarding maternal mental health whom are already working with another mental health provider. This may pertain to those planning for pregnancy, currently pregnant, or in the postpartum period.
A one-time consultation (as opposed to establishing ongoing care with me) can be feasible in cases where a patient and the referring provider intend to continue treatment with one another afterwards. The purpose of a consultation can be for more specialized recommendations or a second opinion, which would be share with the patient and referring provider.
Almost all sessions are conducted virtually, using a HIPAA-compliant video platform. I have limited availability for in-person appointments in my Santa Monica office on an as-needed basis when deemed necessary. All New York visits will be conducted virtually only.
The first step is to connect over the phone for about 15 minutes. Here, we will briefly discuss the reasons for seeking treatment and, if appropriate, arrange a formal initial evaluation.
It is important to know this phone call does not establish a doctor-patient relationship, nor is it designed to provide diagnostic or therapeutic information.
This evaluation is a total of 90 minutes and can take place in one sitting or divided over two visits, 45-minutes each. In some cases, I may recommended splitting the evaluations this way to allow more of an opportunity to incorporate other sources of information (ie. more medical history from other doctors, collateral information from close contacts) in forming an initial impression, though it is not always necessary and would only be done with the patient's consent.
The purpose of the initial evaluation is to gather information to form a general diagnostic impression and recommendations for treatment. During sessions, patients can expect to discuss things such as their current symptoms, medical and mental health history, developmental and social history, as well as treatment goals. Towards the end of the evaluation, we will discuss the initial diagnostic picture and recommendations for treatment, which includes deciding if we will continue to work with one another and establish a doctor-patient relationship.
In some cases, it may be more beneficial for a patient to have specialized care that is different from the care that I provide. In these instances, we will discuss the rationale and recommendations, and appropriate referrals will be provided.
Completion of formal initial consultation is not a guarantee of future treatment. This relationship can be established after the initial evaluation if both parties agree to pursue treatment.
I am out-of-network and do not participate in any insurance panels.
Many patients have out-of-network benefits and may be eligible for reimbursement from their insurance companies. I provide a monthly superbill that patients can submit to their insurance companies for reimbursement. Reimbursement rates range from 0-100% of the cost of treatment. Please call your insurance company to verify out-of-network benefits.
